This resource guide equips healthcare providers with the knowledge and skills to screen for and treat pregnant and postpartum patients with opioid, stimulant, and other substance use disorders in an empathetic, patient-centered way.

Participants will learn evidence-based strategies for having supportive, non-stigmatizing conversations and will gain access to actionable tools for making informed care decisions. The guide also highlights resources and referral pathways to ensure patients are connected with the care and support they need.
Course Objective:
Learners will be able to: 
  1. Recognize common barriers pregnant and postpartum patients face when seeking treatment for opioid, stimulant, and other substance use disorders.
  2. Learn how to engage patients in empathetic, non-stigmatizing conversations about substance use during pregnancy and postpartum.
  3. Describe recommended workflows for screening, treatment, and referral for opioid, stimulant, and other substance use disorders during pregnancy and postpartum.
  4. Locate local DC-based treatment and support resources to share with pregnant and postpartum patients and their families.
