This workshop will review the concept of duty to warn and explore the various ethical decision-making models that can be used to resolve ethical dilemmas. Participants will  explore and discuss the ethics and balance needed when patient confidentiality and duty to warn do not align. It is imperative to understand the parameters and sanctions related to duty to warn. This workshop will explore the history of the duty to warn (landmark cases), confidentiality, and discrepancies in duty to warn laws. Discussion will focus on: confidentiality dilemmas, duty to warn laws, code of ethics, ethical framework model, and best practice technique.  This is an interactive workshop where cases vignettes will be presented, and participants will work in group setting to further maximize their understanding of the concepts presented.

Objective:
  1. Explain the duty to warn principles and connect them to confidentiality and reporting. 
  2. Identify landmark cases and the history behind principle. 
  3. Apply an ethical decision-making model to help process and resolve the duty to warn issues.

Driving Directions:
64 New York Avenue is located at the intersection of Florida, New York and First Streets, NE. Metro: Take the red line to the Noma/Gallaudet University (previously called New York Avenue) metro stop. Walk west on N Street and turn right at 1st Street NE. Cross over New York Avenue. You will see a large clock tower with the number 64. Enter through the gate and walk toward the first entrance of the building.
Parking:
There is a small parking lot with very limited available spaces. However, there is street parking in the blocks adjacent to 64 NY Avenue, but be mindful of posted restrictions.
