Description:

*Registration will close on Friday, September 25, 2026; at 9:00am*

Alcohol Use Disorder remains one of the most common and under-treated behavioral health conditions encountered in clinical practice. Despite the availability of validated screening tools, effective brief interventions, and FDA-approved pharmacotherapies, national data continue to show low rates of routine screening, inconsistent use of motivational approaches, underutilization of medications for AUD, and limited attention to the needs of special populations (e.g., older adults, pregnant patients, individuals with co-occurring psychiatric disorders, and patients in medically complex or under-resourced settings). This series addresses each of these gaps directly, translating current evidence and guidelines into practical, session-by-session clinical skill-building.

Objective:

Overall Series Learning Objectives

·       Apply validated tools to screen for and identify problematic alcohol use and AUD across the severity spectrum.

·       Deliver brief interventions using motivational interviewing techniques and facilitate effective referral to treatment.

·       Identify and manage evidence-based pharmacotherapy and supportive treatment approaches for patients with AUD.

·       Facilitate screening, brief intervention, and treatment strategies into a coordinated continuum of care by applying these skills to complex, realistic patient cases.

Session 4 September 28, 2026; 1:00pm-3:00pm Objectives

Putting It All Together: Integrated Case-Based Application

·       Synthesize screening, brief intervention, motivational interviewing, and pharmacotherapy/supportive treatment strategies from Sessions 1–3 into a single, coordinated approach to patient care.

·       Apply validated screening and diagnostic criteria to determine severity and appropriate next steps using realistic patient cases.

·       Select and justify brief intervention, pharmacotherapy, and/or supportive treatment approaches based on case-specific clinical presentations.

Evaluate common clinical challenges (e.g., ambivalence, comorbidity, relapse, treatment non-response) through guided case discussion and audience application.
