Alcohol Use Disorder remains one of the most common and under-treated behavioral health conditions encountered in clinical practice. Despite the availability of validated screening tools, effective brief interventions, and FDA-approved pharmacotherapies, national data continue to show low rates of routine screening, inconsistent use of motivational approaches, underutilization of medications for AUD, and limited attention to the needs of special populations (e.g., older adults, pregnant patients, individuals with co-occurring psychiatric disorders, and patients in medically complex or under-resourced settings). This series addresses each of these gaps directly, translating current evidence and guidelines into practical, session-by-session clinical skill-building.

Objective:

Overall Series Learning Objectives

·       Apply validated tools to screen for and identify problematic alcohol use and AUD across the severity spectrum.

·       Deliver brief interventions using motivational interviewing techniques and facilitate effective referral to treatment.

·       Identify and manage evidence-based pharmacotherapy and supportive treatment approaches for patients with AUD.

·       Facilitate screening, brief intervention, and treatment strategies into a coordinated continuum of care by applying these skills to complex, realistic patient cases.

Session 1 August 31, 2026; 1:00pm-3:00pm Objectives

Screening and Identification of Problematic Alcohol Use and Alcohol Use Disorder

• Describe the spectrum of unhealthy alcohol use, from risky drinking to severe AUD.

• Apply validated screening instruments (e.g., AUDIT, AUDIT-C, single-item screen) in clinical practice.
