Substance misuse and suicide are closely interconnected public health challenges that share many of the same risk and protective factors, affect many of the same populations, and benefit from coordinated prevention efforts. In this interactive session, participants will explore the relationship between substance misuse and suicide prevention through a public health lens, examine current data and trends, and identify the shared risk and protective factors that influence both outcomes. Through facilitated discussion and real-world examples, participants will discover opportunities to strengthen collaboration and integrate prevention efforts within their own communities.

Objective:

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

 1. Describe the relationship between substance misuse and suicide prevention using a public health framework.

2. Identify the shared risk and protective factors that contribute to both substance misuse and suicide.

3. Explain how public health prevention frameworks, including the Spectrum of Mental, Emotional, and Behavioral Interventions, support integrated substance misuse and suicide prevention efforts.

4. Recognize opportunities for collaboration between substance misuse and suicide prevention initiatives within their communities.
