Description:
*Registration will close 24 hours before the training*
Catatonia remains an elusive and enigmatic
syndrome that still suffers from the century long burden of its previously
strong association to schizophrenia. Soon thereafter, it fell into anonymity
and was believed to have vanished. We will review an agnostic approach to
identifying catatonia (regardless of etiology) covering 3 domains of pathology
and 3 aspects of each domain that would indicate dysfunction. Additionally, we
will review a case and work through the process of recognition, treatment,
observation, rating scale application, while also discussing etiology
(considering and reconsidering diagnosis), optimization and long term treatment
expectations. We will briefly review the factor structure of catatonia.
Objective:
By the end of this training,
participants will be able to: - Name
each of the three major varieties of catatonia and identify the distinguishing
features amongst them.
- Discuss two treatment scenarios in which catatonia is likely to be encountered or induced
with inappropriate treatment.
- List one
first line treatment and one second line treatment for catatonia.
Intended Audience:
Psychiatrists, Nurses, Social Workers, Psychologists, Licensed Professional Counselors
