Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming behavioral health, social services, and community-based care. From clinical documentation to decision support tools and client-facing technologies, AI is already shaping how behavioral health providers engage with individuals, families, and communities. Yet, these tools are often developed without the input of those most impacted—raising critical concerns around partiality, ethics, neutrality, and trust.

This two-part interactive series is designed to equip behavioral health professionals within the DC provider network with the knowledge, skills, and ethical frameworks needed to responsibly engage with AI in practice. Grounded in real-world case studies and participatory discussion, this series emphasizes both the promise and the risks of AI—centering the role of behavioral health professionals as leaders in shaping equitable, person-centered innovation.

Part 1: Understanding AI in Behavioral Health Practice
May 5, 2026
10am - 12pm (EST)

This session introduces foundational concepts in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and explores how AI is currently being used across behavioral health and social service settings. Participants will examine real-world applications, including large language models, predictive tools, and digital mental health supports, while critically assessing their implications for practice.

The session will also highlight emerging evidence on how AI systems can perpetuate partiality—particularly affecting individuals with serious mental illness, various communities, and those with limited digital access.

Part 2: Ethical Decision-Making & Responsible AI Integration
May 7, 2026
10am - 12pm (EST)

Building on part one, this interactive session focuses on ethical frameworks and practical strategies for integrating AI into behavioral health practice responsibly. Participants will engage in case-based learning to evaluate AI outputs, identify risks, and apply ethical decision-making models grounded in behavioral health values. The session will also explore how behavioral health professionals can play a leadership role in co-designing AI tools with communities and supporting responsible implementation across systems.
Objective:
By the end of this series, participants will be able to:
  1. Define key concepts related to artificial intelligence, including large language models, machine learning, and decision-support tools, in the context of behavioral health practice.
  2. Identify current and emerging applications of AI in social work and behavioral health settings, including both provider-facing and client-facing tools.
  3. Recognize potential risks and harms, including algorithmic partiality, misinformation, privacy concerns, and preferential access to AI technologies.
  4. Apply ethical frameworks grounded in behavioral health principles (e.g., dignity, autonomy, fairness) to evaluate the use of AI in real-world scenarios.
  5. Critically assess AI-generated outputs for partiality, person-centered care, and trauma sensitivity.
  6. Develop practical strategies for safely integrating AI into workflows while maintaining professional and ethical standards.
  7. Define the role of behavioral health professionals as leaders in shaping, co-designing, and establishing the development of responsible AI systems in behavioral health.
  8. Engage clients and communities in conversations about AI use, transparency, and consent in care delivery.
Intended Audience:
