This two-part training series provides an in-depth overview of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ9) and its application in identifying and monitoring depression among individuals with co-occurring depression and substance use disorders (SUD). Participants will learn how to accurately administer, score, and interpret the tool to enhance clinical decision-making and integrated care. 


PART 1: February 3, 2026 10:30am – 12:00pm EST

Part one of this training series will equip practitioners with the knowledge and skills to effectively administer, score, interpret, and utilize the PHQ-9 to screen for and monitor depression in clients with substance use disorders. 


PART 2: February 10, 2026 10:30am – 12:00pm EST

Part two will equip participants with the knowledge and skills to understand remission in depression and substance use, effectively monitor progress using the PHQ-9, recognize relapse warning signs, and apply appropriate therapeutic interventions and psychosocial supports.

Objective:

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

 Part 1

  • Identify the prevalence and significance of co-occurring disorders and substance use disorders.
  • Describe the PHQ-9 as a screening tool and its limitations.
  • Explain PHQ-9 scores and make appropriate referrals.
  • Discuss strategies for addressing depression in clients with substance use disorders.

 

Part 2

  • Define and differentiate between full and partial remission in the context of depression and substance use.
  • Recognize the importance of tracking remission status and how it affects treatment planning.
  • Adapt the PHQ-9 tool to monitor patient progress and track changes over time.
  • Identify common warning signs of relapse and apply early intervention strategies.
  • Describe the role of therapeutic interventions and psychosocial supports in long-term recovery.

You must attend both parts of this webinar series to receive 2.5 credits. Those who attend only one part of this series will only be eligible to receive 1.25 credits.

This training is in partnership with the Central East Addiction Technology Transfer Center (CE ATTC) and will be held as a live webinar on Zoom. The Central East PTTC is managed by The Danya Institute. Zoom login information will be sent, from the Danya Institute to all registered participants at least one day in advance of the training.
