Description:
*Registration for this training will close 24 hours before the lecture*
Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) offers a neurobiological and psychodynamic framework for understanding how psychological and physical symptoms develop and persist. Rooted in the work of Habib Davanloo, MD, this model explains how emotions linked to early attachment trauma trigger anxiety and activate unconscious defenses. Over time, these defensive and physiological responses become automatic, producing the very symptoms that bring patients to treatment.
This presentation will outline how the interplay of stimuli, feeling, anxiety, defense, and outcomes leads to symptom formation, and how helping patients face previously avoided feelings and conflicts can bring lasting relief. Participants will learn to identify the emotional and physiological origins of symptoms, distinguish between core feelings and anxiety, and understand how anxiety and defensive patterns maintain suffering. The session will include clinical examples relevant to both medical and mental health professionals.
Objective:
At the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Describe how
unconscious emotional processes, anxiety, and defense mechanisms interact to
produce psychological and physical symptoms.
- Differentiate among
triggers, core emotional experiences, anxiety responses, defensive processes,
and resultant outcomes within the therapeutic context.
- Identify and describe
four distinct types of anxiety including their physiological pathways,
observable clinical signs to enhance assessment and intervention within
psychotherapy.
Intended Audience:
Psychiatrists, nurses,
social workers, psychologists, licensed professional counselors
