Description:

The session will explore best practices for supporting individuals as they transition between levels of care, with a focus on balancing public safety, individual rights, and effective treatment planning. Through case studies, legal analysis and interactive discussions, attendees will leave with the knowledge and tools needed to navigate the complexities of outpatient commitment while promoting successful outcomes for individuals and the community.

Objective:

1.      Explain the legal and procedural framework for the civil commitment outpatient process (CMOP) in Washington DC, including the criteria for commitment, multiple entry pathways, and the court process.

2.      Identify strategies for supporting CMOP individuals by recognizing signs of non-compliance or deterioration and implementing proactive interventions.

3.      Describe the process for hospitalizing a non-compliant or deteriorating CMOP individual.

4.      Describe the process of transitioning a CMOP individual from hospitalization back into the community, including discharge planning, coordination of outpatient services, and strategies to support continuity of care.
