Description:

The activity was designed to improve understanding of psychiatric barriers associated with competency to stand trial in the District of Columbia and methods employed in inpatient forensic settings to restore competency.  This program is limited only to DBH staff.

Physicians (ACCME) Credit Designation

Psychologists (APA) Credit Designation

District of Columbia's Department of Behavioral Health (DBH) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. DBH maintains responsibility for this program and its content. DBH is offering 1.5 hours of Psychology CEs for this activity.


Social Workers (ASWB) Credit Designation

As a Jointly Accredited Organization, Amedco is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Amedco maintains responsibility for this course. ASWB Learner Level: Intermediate. Social Workers completing this course receive 1.5 GENERAL continuing education credits.

Objective:

·        List 3 potential psychiatric barriers commonly associated with incompetence to stand trial

·        Differentiate between the different forensic pre-trial statuses in Washington, DC

·        Describe 3 methods of competency restoration available in a forensic inpatient hospital in Washington, DC

·        Prepare competency restoration groups targeting factual and rational understanding

Psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, psychologists, licensed professional counselors (This program is limited only to DBH staff).
