This course will provide a review of the Transtheoretical Model of Change, also known as the Stages of Change. The Stages of Change is an evidence-based approach designed to evaluate an individual’s readiness to change, based on their needs and treatment progress. The model also incorporates a person-centered approach to treatment designed to provide mental health and addiction treatment professionals the basic concepts of the six stages of change and employs techniques applicable to each stage to facilitate behavioral change.

Objective:
  1. Define the Stages of Change Model
  2. Identify the common characteristics of each stage of change
  3. Identify therapeutic tasks and strategies for each stage of change
  4. Demonstrate ability to use clinical interventions applicable to each stage of change

There are two lessons included in this training. The first lesson introduces the Transtheoretical Stages of Change Model, reviewing motivation and the change process, the keys to readiness and the characteristics of the six stages of change. The second lesson focuses on the clinical interventions, therapeutic tasks, and strategies helpful at each stage of change. The course culminates in a case study exercise where participants will utilize learned objectives to assess their knowledge and skills.
