Hosted By:
DBH Training Institute

Description:

Introduction to LGBT cultural competency, including LGBT demographics in the U.S., LGBT health disparities, language and vocabulary, understanding the trans experience, and how to make healthcare more inclusive and welcoming. Gender and sexual minorities sometimes avoid seeking needed health care for fear of being treated poorly or because of the assumption that providers won't be culturally sensitive or competent. Recognizing this knowledge gap, the DC City Council mandated that all health professionals complete two hours of LGBT cultural competency training each licensure cycle. This training helps fill this gap.

Objective:
  1. Describe basic principles of gender identity and sexual orientation.
  2. Define health disparities experienced by gender and sexual minorities.
  3. Discuss the importance of gender and identity-inclusive language and terminology.
  4. Describe ways that health providers can be more welcoming and inclusive of sexual and gender minorities.
