Description:

This 8 hour course teaches lay-persons how to recognize thesigns and symptoms of Mental Illness and Substance Use disorders, deescalatecrisis, provide comfort, and refer individuals to professional services. Theprogram utilizes interactive exercises and role playing activities to teach ourunique action plan on how to help. Courses need are scheduled for at least nine(9) hours of attendance time, to factor breaks and mealtimes into class schedule.

 

This course is not approved for continuing education.

 

 

 

Objective:

1. Assess for risk of suicide or harm

2. Demonstrate how to listen non-judgmentally

3. Identify the signs and symptoms of anxiety disordersand depression

4. Show how to give someone in crisis reassurance and information

5. List the signs and symptoms of Psychosis and SubstanceUse Disorders

6. Describe signs and symptoms of eating disorders

7. Identify four supportive interventions for: depression,anxiety, psychosis, substance abuse, or eating disorders

Driving Directions:
64 New York Avenue is located at the intersection of Florida, New York and First Streets, NE. Metro: Take the red line to the Noma/Gallaudet University (previously called New York Avenue) metro stop. Walk west on N Street and turn right at 1st Street NE. Cross over New York Avenue. You will see a large clock tower with the number 64. Enter through the gate and walk toward the first entrance of the building.
Parking:
There are three parking lots for attendees that charge between $9-12, regardless of duration. The two outside lots only accept cash payment. There is also street parking in the blocks adjacent to 64 NY Avenue, but be mindful of posted restrictions.
