Description:

This course will provide students with the skills needed to effectively handle the variety of conflict situations that regularly occur in the behavioral healthcare system. It combines in-person workshops, distance learning at students’ own pace via the internet, and personalized mentoring from instructors. The course focuses on some of the key ways that people experience and respond to conflict. Then, with negotiation theory as a base, students will develop conflict management skills needed for effective response to common problems.

Objective:

1.       Understand key elements of conflict theory

2.       Understand and apply techniques for distributive and integrative bargaining

3.       Sharpen communication skills in a negotiation setting

Intended Audience:
Staff will role in mediation or conflict management at their agencies.

Driving Directions:
64 New York Avenue is located at the intersection of Florida, New York and First Streets, NE. Metro: Take the red line to the Noma/Gallaudet University (previously called New York Avenue) metro stop. Walk west on N Street and turn right at 1st Street NE. Cross over New York Avenue. You will see a large clock tower with the number 64. Enter through the gate and walk toward the first entrance of the building.
Parking:
There are three parking lots for attendees that charge between $9-12, regardless of duration. The two outside lots only accept cash payment. There is also street parking in the blocks adjacent to 64 NY Avenue, but be mindful of posted restrictions.
